Dripping Springs, ‘Gateway to the Hill Country’, is situated 25 miles from downtown Austin. it offers rustic vistas of rolling oak-covered hills, abundant wildlife, and creeks. It boasts a population of about 2500, but a much larger population in its extraterritorial jurisdiction. For many years, Dripping Springs ISD has had an exceptional and award-winning school district, which is a valuable draw to families looking for quality country living in convenient proximity to the dynamic hub of Austin.
Located along a road that once carried supplies to a remote army post in Fredricksburg, the town was founded when three families settled here as they moved west from Mississippi in 1854. At the time, the area was still considered frontier, and was still populated by Tonkawa Indians. Dripping Springs remained unincorporated until 1981, when residents exercised their independent spirit and incorporate in order to prevent Austin from annexing the area into its jurisdiction.
The oldest existing building in ‘Drip’ is the log room of the Pound House, built in 1855 and located in Founders Park. The city is rich in history and boasts a number of other interesting historical buildings and homes. While honoring its past, this is not a city which looks backward. It is a vibrant community with a strong focus on family and fun. The area offers beautiful areas for outdoor activity, such as Hamilton Pool, Pedernales Falls State Park and West Cave Preserve.
Dripping Springs Farmers Market is held every Thursday, spring through fall, from 3:00 to 6:00 p.m. in the “Triangle”, the heart of downtown. This is a certified market offering locally grown foods and craft goods.
A neighborhood gem, fit for foodies, is the Creek Road Cafe , a charming family owned and operated restaurant open for lunch and dinner, and offering an innovative menu which features seasonal specials and, wherever possible, locally sourced meat and produce. Another local favorite is New Canaan Farms, which makes a fabulous selection of jams, jellies and salsas.
And if you are in town at lunchtime, stop in to Thyme and Dough for a special fresh menu on home-baked breads, with special homemade pies and pastries. This is a special, easy-going place to spend a bit of time over a cup of tea, special soup, or great sandwich. We just visited them again recently, and found that they had grown, expanding into a beautiful new space and renovating the old, adding decks and tables. It is utterly charming, and the home baked, home cooked food is superb, as always.
Dripping Springs is growing, and has recently added H-E-B and Home Depot , among many other retailers, to provide convenient shopping for residents of this vibrant area.
We are thrilled at our newest restaurant in the area, Bordeaux’s at 3991 E. Hwy 290. Open from 5 to 9 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday, this excellent restaurant is a sister to their location in Kyle.
